Throat Procedures and Treatments
Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy
If the tonsils and/or adenoids which are both present in the back of the throat seem to be causing frequent infections, snoring, sleep apnea or other related conditions, one of our ENT specialists may determine that removal is in one’s best interest.
The surgeries to remove the tonsils and adenoids are called tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Frequently they are performed together but can easily be done separately depending on what needs to be done. Although both the tonsils and adenoids play important roles in our immunity, thankfully the other parts of the immune system take over when they are removed and there is no obvious compromise to overall health. Generally, when problematic tonsils and adenoids are removed, there are less infections and breathing becomes much easier, especially while sleeping.
Complications from tonsil and adenoid surgeries usually involve bleeding since the area is heavily supplied with blood. All blood thinning medications must be avoided for up to two weeks before the surgery. These procedures are done under general anesthesia and staying overnight in the hospital is uncommon.
Recovery from tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy can take anywhere from around 10-14 days for most individuals. Interestingly, children recover quicker from tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies with less reported pain than adults. A very sore throat and painful swallowing is to be expected for the first few days following the surgery. Cold liquids and soft food along with pain medication can help soothe and reduce inflammation. The specialists at ENT Centers of North Texas will provide thorough post-procedure instructions, provide close follow up to ensure proper healing and as much comfort as possible. Once healed, throat and even ear infections decrease significantly. Many patients sleep and breathe better after troublesome tonsils and adenoids are removed.

Laryngectomy
Laryngectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the larynx due to cancer or injury. This procedure affects breathing, swallowing, and voice. Post-operative patients require a stoma (surgically created opening in the skin) for breathing. Many need speech therapy or devices to restore communication ability. Regular follow-up care is essential.
